The five days that followed have become the subject of the bestselling book Between a Rock and a Hard Place, multiple documentaries, and now, the Oscar-nominated feature film 127 Hours, which depicts his spiritual transformation and eventual escape from his predicament through the amputation of his right arm below the elbow.However, it was his life before he went on that fateful hike that helped him survive, he says, a combination of the emotional bonds he shared with his family, the formal education he received as a mechanical engineering student at Carnegie Mellon University, and the practical experience he had gained to that point.It was the perfect situation for me because of all my past experiences. I had to draw on almost everything that had ever happened to me in my life in order to come through it, Aron said.An Engineering MindsetIn addition to the sunsets he watched with his father growing up, the impromptu childhood piano recitals with his sister, and the countless other moving recollections that gave him hope during his ordeal, he also cites his time as a search and rescue volunteer, his stint with Intel Corp. as an engineer doing cleanroom maintenance, and of course, his degree in mechanical engineering as being key factors in deciding his fat e.It may be inconceivable to many that in the midst of such a terrifying, life-or-death situation, Aron was able to keep his wits, but to him, it was all part of the engineering mindset, the analytical, rational, problem-solving kind of a person that he is.Being able to plan for the future, and come up with contingencies, and have margins of safety and things like this. I was very much making those plans while in the canyon too, he said. If I could get free, how would I get back to my vehicle? Which way would I go? Would I go to my bike first and then to my truck, or would I go straight for my truck? Would I have to do the rappel?And by rappel of course, Aron is referring to the 60-foot climb down a sheer cliff that awaited him even after extricating himself from the boulder through the amputation a feat that many would find impossible even under perfect conditions, let alone while experiencing full-fledged shock symptoms.Yet even now, he refuses to see the events of those five days as anything but a positive, a fact that may be more moving and uplifting than any other part of his story. He also refuses to see himself in anything but humble terms.We Aron and 127 Hours director Danny Boyle saw this as being something that is not a supermenschengerecht story but really a human story. Special Issue of ASME Journal Features Papers from Annual Grand Challenge Competition A new special issue of the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, which was published in February 2016, features a series of papers from the sixth and final Grand Challenge Competition to Predict In Vivo Knee Loads. The competition, which launched in 2010, provided researchers with the opportunity to predict in vivo knee contact forces, as measured by instrumented knee replacements, using musculoskeletal modeling methods but without having access to the experimental contact force measurements. Unlike the five previous competitions, which were held during the ASME Summer Bioengineering Conference, the final competition was organized through the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. The shift to a journal-based competition eliminated the time and financial costs associated with traveling to a conference and made it easier for researchers from around the world to participate, which encouraged broader participation. The special issue features papers from the four teams that completed this years competition, including the competitions winning research paper, Intra-Articular Knee Contact Force Estimation During Walking Using Force-Reaction Elements and Subject-Specific Joint Model, by Yihwan Jun, Cong-Bo Phan, and Seungbum Koo from Chung-Ang University in Korea. The competition was organized by B.J. What Advice Would You Give Students Who Are Interested in a Career in Sports Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!! Most schools have athletic departments, and even if you are a ticket taker or a customer service rep, having that experience on your resume will put you above someone who doesnt. Spend a summer working for a minor league team or become a team manager for any one of your schools teams. Get as involved as possible in sports as you can, and try to pick an aspect of it that you are interested in. If you are interested in the sales side, then work with your colleges ticket office. If youre interested in marketing, volunteer to help out at football or basketball games. Even if youre not getting paid, that experience will be priceless. Many professional sports teams also have game night or day positions, which are great for students because of the flexible hours. Are There Any Specific Majors That Would Prepare Students for a Career Many big schools are now offering Sport Management majors or minors, and that is a great way to learn about the industry. When I look at resumes, I look more at the experience than the major. What Does Orlando Magic Look for When Interviewing Interns and Employees We look for someone who is hard working and passionate about sports. When you work in Sports, you do not work the typical 9-5 day. There are days when you work 12-15 hours based on the game schedule, and we look for someone who is passionate enough about sports to love those long days! We normally receive about 100 resumes for each internship we offer, and I normally interview approximately 10 of those candidates for each internship. The things that impress me most in those interviews are people who are focused, have done their research on the Magic, and are excited about the opportunity. Candidates who are applying for an internship in the exact area they want to work in in the future is great as well, as that shows they have goals and they might be a good full-time candidate down the line. What Personal Attributes and Experiences Does Orlando Magic Seek in Their Job Applicants We look for positive people with great attitudes who will fit into our culture. They need to have strong goals and the work ethic to reach those goals. Since we have internships in several different areas, candidates who have specific experience, whether it be in a club, volunteering, part or full-time positions in the specific area they are applying for, will really stand out. How Can College Students Prepare Themselves for a Career in the Sports Industry Volunteering and getting that experience is the most important thing. Many schools have groups or clubs that students can be involved with as well. But their requests are not guaranteed to get approved. A recent New York Times investigation into the public records involving workers with miscarriages demonstrates the high stakes of what can happen when these requests get denied and the mother and baby’s health get put in jeopardy.How pregnancy discrimination can cause miscarriagesIn the report, multiple women who worked at a Memphis, Tennessee warehouse for a Verizon contractor - first owned by New Breed Logistics and then by XPO Logistics - spoke out about how their employer denied their request for a lighter workload and suffered miscarriages as a result of their work. Some even got rejected in spite of doctor’s notes recommending otherwise.Their stories are harrowing and disturbing. Erica Hayes, for example, told the Times that she pleaded to work with lighter boxes during her pregnancy and got re peatedly denied by her supervisor. She kept working because she had to. “My job was on the line,” she said.   One day “blood-drenched her jeans” and she fainted coming out of a bathroom, the report detailed. She ended up miscarrying. “It was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life,” Hayes said about the experience. Verizon said it opened an internal investigation in response to The Times‘ inquiry.Some people can work during their pregnancy without needing accommodations, but when the job is more physical, doctors acknowledge there is a risk of losing the baby. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, workers who do “extensive occupational lifting” can experience a “modest increased risk of miscarriage.”But your employer does not necessarily need to follow your doctor’s advice. “Under federal law, companies don’t necessarily have to adjust pregnant women’s jobs, even when lighter work is available and their doctors send letters urging a reprieve,” the Times details, citing how the Pregnancy Discrimination Act only has to accommodate pregnant employees’ requests if the employer is already doing so for other employees “similar in their ability or inability to work.”  If your employer is already treating your non-pregnant employees terribly by overworking them, they do not have to treat pregnant employees any better.Under the 1978 federal law, employees must treat employees similarly, but not necessarily well. In 2013, over 5,000 pregnancy discrimination charges were filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  Ã¢€œIn every congressional session since 2012, a group of lawmakers has introduced a bill that would do for pregnant women what the Americans With Disabilities Act does for disabled people: require employers to accommodate those whose health depends on it. The legislation has never had a hearing,” the Times notes.

Dr. Barthelemy joined the research department of Ford Motor Co. in 1988, and since then has worked in a variety of capacities in product development throughout the company's United States, Europe and Asia operations. Barthelemy graduated from the University of Liege in Belgium in 1982 with bachelor's and master's degrees from the university's electrical and mechanical engineering department. He completed his graduate studies at Virginia Tech, where he received a master's degree in engineering sciences and mechanics and a Ph.D. from the department of aerospace and ocean engineering. Egidio (Ed) Marotta and Stephen Szpunar Egidio (Ed) Marotta, Ph.D., and Stephen Szpunar of GE Oil Gas will speak at the final Invited Industry Presentation, to be held Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. As the systems analysis and modeling manager for the company's Systems Engineering and Advanced Technology (SEAT) Team, Dr. Marotta works across GE Oil Gas to develop strategic roadmaps for advanced systems simulation and modeling.
