So, in contemplating your own career change, consider how you can make and keep your commitment to success.   Below are 3 great ways to get started: Time Commitment How much time are you devoting to finding your ideal career?   If you don’t have a set time set aside for it, make that a priority.   I suggest committing at least 30 minutes a day to your ideal career search. Staying Open Commitment Are you open to new possibilities or do you throw away ideas before they can be fully explored?   This is a common problem for career seekers.   Make a commitment to be open to new ideas and to fully explore what inspires and excites you. Second Career PR Exec Now Raises Millions for Injured Vets Just four years ago Vicki Thomas was a successful public relations executive in New York City with high-profile financial services clients. But she was was growing frustrated. “There was a voice calling me to really make a difference in the lives of others, not just improve a client’s bottom line,” says Thomas. “I wanted to do something more fulfilling, but I wasn’t sure what it was going to be.” Then one day in 2009, she saw a news segment on CNN about Purple Heart Homes, a North Carolina organization founded by Iraq veterans Dale Beatty and John Gallina to provide handicap-accessible homes to wounded vets. Beatty and Gallina, who also suffered combat injuries, focus on vets who lack the money and resources to renovate their own residences. Thomas felt an immediate connection and wanted to help the fledgling organization raise more money. Improving their marketing and public relations outreach was key. “I knew they could use professional advice but couldn’t afford the kind of expertise I could give,” says Thomas. She cold-called Gallina and Beatty, leaving a message offering her services pro-bono. “It took them two weeks to call me. But we agreed to meet and we’ve been working together since.” Thomas left her corporate PR career behind in 2009 and began drawing on her 35 years of experience in fundraising and marketing to bring attention to the non-profit. “When I met them, I couldn’t get a news story in the local paper about them,” says Thomas. A few months later, thanks in large part to her network of contacts, Gallina and Beatty were featured in a 2011 Time magazine cover story about a new generation of veterans bringing their leadership lessons homeâ€"they even appeared on the cover. “That opened so many doors. ABC News and Nightline did stories on them, and money started pouring in,” says Thomas. Today, as the chief communications officer for Purple Heart Homes, Thomas has helped raised millions in financial contributions and material donations. In her first year with the start up, contributions rocketed from $67,000 to $2 million. With that cash horde, the non-profit was able to qualify for grants, including a major donation from Home Depot, which further improved its financial stability. She’s particularly proud of a program she launched that matches veterans with foreclosed homes donated by banks. After providing her services pro bono for two and a half years, Thomas now 68, began working full time for Purple Heart Homes in 2012 and drawing a salary of $48,000 a year. It’s a lot less than what she earned in her PR career, and she’s fine with that. Her husband still works, but “we’re at an age where we’re not buying stuff,” she says. She enjoys the different pace of her work life, which is far less hectic than her days in PR. “I have so much flexibilityâ€"I can take a play day when I want to,” says Thomas, who works from her home in Connecticut. “I probably have a more perfect balance in my life than I ever had before.” As for retirement, it’s not happening. “They’ll have to carry me out on a flip chart,” she says. “I believe you remain much more vital and connected if you can work in some capacity, especially if you are doing something you are passionate about.” Vicki Thomas was the 2013 Winner of the Purpose Prize for Future Promise, sponsored by Symetra. 3 Reasons Why Your Interviewer Isnt Your Friend - Work It Daily I’m going to tell you something that shouldn't come as a surprise. Ready? Okay... Your interviewer is not your friend. But you already knew that, right? So, why do so many job candidates seem to make this mistake? Those who've read my other blogs and How to Get a Legal Job: A Guide for New Attorneys and Law School Students know I spend a great deal of time talking to hiring decision-markers, including hiring directors, interviewers, personnel managers, and recruiters in many different industriesâ€"in other words, the people who will be interviewing you. These interviewers complain, time and time again, job candidates make the critical error of behaving as if the interviewer is a trusted old friend. 1. This Isn't A Two-Way Street Your interviewer doesn’t care about you. She cares only about herself and her employer. When she asks you about yourself and your goals and your interests, what she really wants to know how well you’re going to fill the employer’s need and whether she wants to work with you. Keep that in mind as you answer her interview questions. 2. You Don’t Owe The Whole Truth Honesty is a good thing. I would never recommend that a job candidate lie or otherwise be dishonest. However, just because you should be truthful, doesn’t mean that you have to offer up the whole dirty truth in every circumstance (and remember that there’s almost always a positive way to explain even bad circumstances). Think about how different it sounds to an interviewer if a job candidate says, “I left my previous job because my boss was a micromanaging jerk who never gave me a moment’s peace,” compared to, “I’m interested in working at your company because of the opportunities to work independently.” 3. Familiarity Isn't Appropriate Be on your best behavior. Casual behavior like putting your feet up on a table, speaking in slang, and other mannerisms are fine when you’re among friend, but are no-nos during an interview. Your interview should be a friendly give-and-take, but it is not a conversation between friends. Both your verbal language and your body language should reflect your respect for the interviewer and your understanding the workplace, especially if you’re applying to be the interviewer’s subordinate rather than her peer. 4. Nothing You Say Is Confidential Finally, remember that there’s no such thing as “off the record” or “just between us” when it comes to the job interview. If youre looking to take the next step and improve, here are a few ideas to try1. Actively read.Have you ever tried reading something only to realize that you have no idea what you just rea d because your mind wandered elsewhere? Same.Active reading forces you to think critically about the material in a deeper way. The good news? Its pretty easy all you need to critically read is a pen and/or a highlighter.Start by underlining and highlighting important ideas. That includes anything that makes you pause, question your own reasoning or feel like you just had an Oprah a ha moment. Use brackets to section off larger paragraphs, draw exclamation marks when something really lands with you and sketch smiley faces if, you know, something makes you smile.The next step is actually writing comments in the margins. Re-read sentences that made you think and write your conclusions alongside them. Treat them as a stream of conscious leides they dont have to make sense to anyone but you. They dont even have to make sense to you if you go back its a way for you to acknowledge any thoughts that pass through your mind, then allow them to move on.2. Read more than just the headlines.Hea dlines and first paragraphs are specifically written in a way to get your attention the writer wants you to click on the article and read it to the end. (Hence the name clickbait.) But if were being honest with ourselves, we already know that reading headlines isnt enough to give us the information we need. How are we supposed to become good thinkers if we dont have all of the knowledge to critically read?The education value of any article lies in the subsequent paragraphs. Those are the paragraphs that will make you want to ask questions, determine if sources are credible and examine your biases. All of these actions with strengthen your cognitive ability.3. Ask questions.My five and six-year-old nieces are not only the worlds cutest children (dont fight me on this), they are also incredible thinkers. Their favorite response to almost anything they see, think or hear is why?Critical thinking requires us to all be more like my nieces. When we read, think or hear ideas, we should que stion them. Not based on any assumptions or arguments that could be had, but from a place of curiosity. If you ask someone why and they dont have an answer, continue to problem solve. Keep searching for conclusions, and yes, its okay to ask the great and powerful Google.4. Determine the credibility of your information sources.The strength and weakness of a Google search is that it can lead you down a rabbit hole. When you do find a source that gives you the answer youre looking for, you need to make sure that its legitimate.You dont need to utilize a lot of critical thinking to know that an email whose subject line reads FWFwfwFW THE END OF DAYS OPEN NOW should be taken with a grain of salt. But as youre training yourself to think critically, there are a few things you should know to check if your source is credible.Go back to basics. Look at your information source and ask who, what, when and where.Who Look to see if the piece you are reading has an author. Most credible sources wa nt you to know who wrote what youre reading. If there isnt an author linked to the piece, is there reasoning as to why?What Look at the content and the website itself. Is it easy to find information on the site? Is it organized intuitively? What about the content of the piece is it riddled with spelling errors? Most credible sources have editors to catch spelling and grammatical issues. Serious news sites dont bury information in an unorganized website either everything should be well-designed and clearly labeled.When If your source is a news site or scientific paper, look for the publication date it can tell you a lot. If the information is old, it might be worth looking for something more current.Where You also want to know where the author got their information. If youre reading something about a current event, issue or thought piece, a reputable source will use evidence and knowledge to support their arguments, not just their beliefs.It also matters what type of source the auth or cites. Is it a first-person account? Another news article? A scientific paper? You should be able to determine where the information in the article came from using your critical thinking skills. If you cant find anything, look at a different source.5. Determine biases.Everyone has biases, but that doesnt make them bad. A bias simply means viewing the world through a certain lens. Its important that youre recognizing and learning about your own biases, but also the biases of authors as well.While you may be able to use enough logic to determine why you are reacting to a piece of information the way you are, it can be more difficult to determine an authors bias. Read a few other pieces by the same author are there any patterns or themes that emerge? Most likely there are, and your discipline process will clarify the authors particular worldview.You can eliminate some forms of bias by going straight to the source. If youre reading a news story, find the original source of informatio n and read it for yourself. From there, you can draw your own conclusions.If the study is big or newsworthy enough, it will most likely be reported on by several different news outlets. Read all of the headlines from different news outlets and ask yourself how do they differ from each other? How do they differ from how you interpreted the report? Comparing the ideas of other thinkers is a good exercise answering these questions can help you think more deeply about the subject.There is plenty of evidence that critical thinking has a large impact on your day-to-day, so be sure to use logic when making decisions as much as you can. Matthew has been the National Christmas Manager at The Smith Family for nearly 12 months. He completed a Bachelor of Environmental Science before undertaking an honours year focused on community involvement. The latter, he says, was a signpost of things to come. He has worked for Landcare Australia and Tennis New South Wales, both not-for-profit organisations. What does your job involve? I manage the logistical components of The Smith Family projects that untersttzungsangebot families at Christmas. This involves coordinating nearly 3000 volunteers to pack 10 000 hampers and 25 000 toy packs and distribute them to thousands of financially disadvantaged families around Austra lia. I have to make sure that we coordinate our activities to meet deadlines. First we pack the toys, then the hampers and, finally, we put them together ready for the delivery drivers. What is it like coordinating so many volunteers? Volunteers are great but allowances have to be made if, for example, a volunteer cant make it on a day that they are scheduled to help. We have to have lots of contingency plans in place because we cant insist that people turn up. However, were very fortunate that the majority do. If we had the funds to hire people to deliver all of the hampers we might not have the logistical problems we do we could just give the drivers the addresses and leave them to get the deliveries done. In reality, we have to support our drivers who in their regular jobs might be accountants, lawyers or administration assistants. Who are the volunteers? Staff from our corporate supporters the companies that help fund The Smith Family activities throughout the year often volu nteer. We also have a lot of repeat volunteers from the general community year in year out. We have one guy in Sydney who has been volunteering to pack hampers for 51 years and now he brings his daughter along. So there is a strong sense of community in the group. What personal qualities do you need to work for The Smith Family? The Smith Family is a large organisation so the ability to communicate clearly and work in a team are key skills. A large proportion of my role as National Christmas Manager is keeping people informed. Around 200 of The Smith Familys more than 500 staff are directly involved in the Christmas activities. What is the hardest part of the job? Having to say no unfortunately this is an aspect of the role. While 10 000 hampers and 25 000 toy packs seems huge, the reality is that we have more requests than we can fulfil. We have a lot of donations including those from the Kmart wishing tree and Woolworths, and we also purchase goods with our budget. Wed love to b e able to say yes to everyone but the reality is that there is a limit to our resources. We send out order forms to families in September and there is an eight-week window in which they can respond. We can generally accommodate the orders that come in a few days late, but there has to be a cut-off point. By the end of the eight-week period weve allocated everything that we have to allocate. Why are the hampers so important to families? The hampers help make sure that Australian children do not miss out on the little joys that make Christmas day special the sharing of presents and food. Did you always want to work for a not-for-profit organisation? It wasnt something that I necessarily aimed for. I believe that its important to be passionate about any work that you do whether its in the corporate or not-for-profit sector. Belief in what you do, and the organisation you work for, is very important it makes it easier to come to work every day. For me, its important to know that Im working for an organisation where the outcomes are so positive. Thats how I feel about my work at The Smith Family. Will you be tired of Christmas by the time it comes? Im still looking forward to Christmas Day its always a great time with family and friends. I dont think I could ever be over Christmas, although, with the amount of wrapping paper and tinsel I see over the next two weeks, it might be hard to get motivated to clean up my place on Boxing Day Want to make a difference in your community just like Matthew?
